William Cavendish, 4th Earl and 1st Duke of Devonshire (1640/1-1707), as a young boy, by John Hoskins, signed with initials and dated 1644, half-length holding a puppy, with red hair, wearing a lace cap and a blue gown with white facings, a plinth to dexter with landscape and distant castle beyond, oval 8.5cm., 8.9cm. high, 7.7cm. high, 1.5cm. deep, rectanglar dark-stained fruitwood veneer frame.
