Vol. I-II. Select Autograph letters

Maker:  Portland Papers

Portland Papers: Vol. I-II. Select Autograph letters, a collection brought to Longleat by Lady Elizabeth Bentinck (married 1754 Thomas, later first Marquess of Bath), whose mother, the only surviving child of Edward, second Earl of Oxford, married the second Duke of Portland. The sixteenth century manuscripts were acquired by her great-grandfather, Robert Harley (first Earl of Oxford), many emanating from a secretary to Lord Burghley, Sir Michael Hicks. These form an early example of a collection put together largely from an autographic standpoint possibly at the instigation of the Harleys' librarian, Humfrey Wanley.
